Whitney Houston died this afternoon, her publicist Kristen Foster has confirmed. The singer was 48.

Sources say a member of Whitney's entourage found her unresponsive in her room at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, where she was slated to attend Clive Davis' annual pre-Grammy party tonight. The event will go on as planned, although news of Houston's passing has undoubtedly changed the mood on the eve of Music's Biggest Night.

The Recording Academy released a statement following the news of the iconic star's tragic death. It reads:

Six-time GRAMMY® winner Whitney Houston was one of the world's greatest pop singers of all time who leaves behind a robust musical soundtrack spanning the past three decades. Her powerful voice graced many memorable and award-winning songs. A light has been dimmed in our music community today, and we extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, fans and all who have been touched by her beautiful voice.

TMZ reports paramedics were called and police arrived to the scene at the Beverly Hilton within minutes, but Houston was unresponsive. CPR was administered but attempts to revive her were unsuccessful, and she was pronounced dead at 3:55 PM. There were no signs of foul play but a full investigation has begun.

Further details surrounding Houston's death are unclear. The singer famously battled drug addiction for years.

Houston won two Emmy Awards, six Grammy Awards, 30 Billboard Music Awards, 22 American Music Awards during her record-breaking career that spanned over 30 years. Her album Whitney was the first female album to ever debut at #1 on the Billboard Charts. She has sold over 200 million albums worldwide.

Houston is survived by one child, Bobbi Kristina, with husband Bobby Brown. Houston and Brown were married from 1992-2007.
