Tony Blair: Bono Will Make Good President

The former British Prime Minister said in his autobiography that the U2 vocalist has the passion and brain of a great world leader.

Former British prime minister Tony Blair is convinced Irish rocker could be running the world if he hadn't shunned politics for a career in rock music. The frontman has spent years wading into political debates and has used his star status to secure meetings with a variety of influential public figures, including Blair, former U.S. president George W. Bush, and most recently enjoying afternoon tea with Russian leader Dmitry Medvedev.

But Blair is adamant the singer could have been a successful politician himself if he hadn't been drawn to music. In his new autobiography, "A Journey", Blair writes, "(Bono) could have been a president or prime minister standing on his head. He had an absolutely natural gift for politicking, was great with people, very smart and an inspirational speaker... motivated by an abundant desire to keep on improving, never really content or relaxed."

"I knew he would work with George (W. Bush) well, and with none of the prissy disdain of most of his ilk."

SRV August 27th 20 years ago...the day the other music died.
Saturday 08-28-2010 4:40am ET

My first experience seeing Stevie Ray Vaughan in concert would sadly be my last. Even more sad, it would be SRV's final night picking up his guitar and making magic.
I had recently graduated Columbia College in Chicago. It was August 1990. I had been to Alpine Valley Music Theatre in Wisconsin months before to see the Stones. Driving back to Chicago was no fun after a great night of music. I decided it would be best to stay overnight at the resort lodge on property after seeing my favorite musician Eric Clapton.
The night of music was magical. Clapton, Robert Cray, Buddy Guy, and Stevie's brother Jimmie.
I remember after Stevie's set a gentleman sitting next to me said he was there to see Stevie and Stevie only. I understood why. His set was blistering. You watched him with your jaw open.
The night of great music ended and my pal from college and I set off back to our room. We crossed over a golf course to get to the resort lodge. We saw the helicopters parked off in the distance and they were not easy to see in the fog. I remember saying to my friend " wow, that's Clapton's helicopter" It was very foggy and I remember also saying that I was surprised they could see anything if they flew in the fog.
We settled in for the night and we were musically satisfied.
We were awakened by our hotel room phone ringing in the morning. It was my mom. I always told mom where I was going, where I was staying so she knew how to reach me. Her words were shocking. She informed us that she heard a news report that some musicians had been killed when a helicopter crashed near the concert site. At the time it was thought that Eric Clapton may have been on board one of the helicopters. We sat up, rubbed our eyes, stunned and opened the hotel room shades. Outside our window we saw emergency crews, a coroner vehicle and several TV news trucks. Above we saw news helicopters flying over and off in the distance...we saw the wreckage. The wreckage on a ski hill on the resort property.
The scene in the lobby was surreal when we went to check out. We were interviewed by reporters about the show the night before, what we saw, if we heard anything.
Still at that time it was unknown who was on board. We overheard another reporter on a pay phone saying "it's like the Buddy Holly crash, we are not sure who was onboard"
Then it had been confirmed, one of the reporters informed us that it was Stevie Ray Vaughan and 3 of Clapton's entourage on the helicopter that crashed. We must have sat stunned in the lobby for at least an hour. We finally checked out, we got in my car still shocked. As we were pulling out we saw a coroner vehicle go right by us. We sat for a few more minutes in the car and well, frankly we cried.
The entire trip back to Chicago, we listened to rock radio stations report the news, play the music of SRV and we knew we had witnessed the final show of a remarkable guitar player.
20 years later Stevie Ray Vaughan's music lives on and it always will.
Thank you SRV. You will never be forgotten.
